What use is it?
MONO Compatibility:
Hit the mono compatibility button at any time to check the mono mix.
Watch out for disappearing reverbs, cancelling stereo spread instruments
(i.e. 180 degree out of phase chorus), phasing issues, and changing mix
levels caused by less definition due to absence of panning information. Bass
end cancellation would indicate a severe phase problem.
Remember that your audience are seldom in
an ideal stereo listening position - whether clubbing or at home, so mono
compatibility is important.
Spectral Contour:
A rule of thumb mixing guide indicates that the bass and treble should have
an optimum "average" level above the middle range. Spectral Mitten uses 5
LEDs to monitor the spectral balance of the material.
Most monitoring systems are bass heavy or bass light and the engineers own
musical taste may also cloud the mix. The LEDs provide a guide to when one
really should reconsider your spectral strategy.
This is also useful for sound designers
when creating pads and wave sequences. It also has uses for verifying the
sub mix of drum loops.
Tricks & Tips:
Some people use the side chain monitor button as a pseudo "kill solo"
switch.
You can use the plug-in as a digital gain control.
A 5:1 surround sound version is available.
It features a Digital Clipping indicator to help avoid distortion and wave
shaping in the digital domain.
